Td5 Technical - Ancillaries

The Td5 engines in both the Defender and Discovery are equipped with a combined 120A alternator and vacuum pump. The vacuum pump supplies the brake servo and the EGR valve.

All Td5 vehicles are fitted with power steering, and the power steering pump is combined into a single unit with the water pump.

The air conditioning compressor is manufactured by Nippon Denso, with an electrically controlled clutch operated by the engine ECU.

With optional Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) fitted to the Discovery, an ACE compressor pump is fitted to the left hand side of the engine to provide fluid at pressure for the ACE system.

The crankshaft drive pulley for all the engine ancillaries has a triple-mass, dual spring configuration. This provides both vibration damping of the crankshaft, and also protects the external ancillaries from engine pulses.
