Faulty Water Sensor

Affected Vehicles

Vehicle VIN Range
Defender Td5 All
Discovery Td5 All

There is a known problem with the fuel water sensor coming on despite the filter being clear of water.

One cause is moisture contamination of the sensor electrode, the sensor seal or the mating face. To clean these areas, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the ignition off and remove the sensor multiplug.
  2. Position a container able to hold approximately 0.5 litres of diesel under the fuel filter.
  3. Drain the filter of diesel by unscrewing the water sensor until fuel flows from the drain tube.
  4. Completely remove the sensor, and using a soft, dry cloth, clean the sensor electrode, sensor seal and mating face, as arrowed below:

  5. Refit the water sensor and replace the multiplug.

If cleaning of the sensor makes no difference, it is likely that the sensor is faulty, and will require replacement.
